Hello and thanks for visiting this page!
Click on the PDF icon below to have a look at the chart of operas I've found with explicitly queer content!
I don't mean explicit, though opera and queer art do often push those boundaries too. I mean that unlike Rosenkavalier, for example, which is obviously queer but veiled within specific conventions, these operas are boldly and overtly queer.
To find out details about some of these operas, I had to deduce information from reviews, track down performers and ask them questions, etc. The file is currently downloadable and I want everyone to benefit from the work I've put into it - acknowledgements are always appreciated but more than anything, I want queer singers, students, teachers, directors, musicologists to be able to find repertoire with 2SLBGTQIA+ representation so I'm releasing this to the world!
Since I submitted my comprehensive exam paper (Tracing Explicit Queerness in Opera from Cherubino to Caitlyn Jenner - abstract and Table of Contents available here) in April 2024, I've found a few more operas with queer content. I will continue my hunt and hope to eventually provide you all with even more info about these pieces.
REPRESENTATION MATTERS!! Especially for our students.
Please check out: La Reine Garçon and Enigma, both of which were at L'Opéra de Montréal a little while ago. Sadly, I was in Berlin working on my comps research at the time and missed the performanes. I will add them to my list as soon as I have a chance.
Finally, if you have suggestions, scores, or anything you want to chat to me about, please get in touch! There's a contact form at the bottom of this page, for convenience.
Cheers, Jay
